Sciatica is a specific from of lower back pain caused by compression of the spinal nerves of the lower back (lumbar spine). This results in irritation of the sciatic nerve that runs from the lower back through the gluteal (bottom) muscles, down the back of the thigh and calf to the foot. Symptoms may be felt at any point along this nerve tract. The symptoms experienced are often described and sharp, shooting, burning pain and areas of altered sensation such as pins and needles, numbness and weakness may also be experienced.

Often this is a result of degeneration of the discs of the lower back, a previous spinal injury, obesity, poor exercise regimes, pregnancy and narrowing of the spinal canal where the nerves originate from. All these result in altered loading of the back and pelvis and may aggravate the discs.

At Your Osteopath we have great success treating this condition with locally targeted treatment including manual therapy and traction with specific exercise regimes initially directed at symptom relief and later intended to prevent future recurrence of the incident.
