Neck pain is quite common today and often due to postural compromise associated with excessive computer, tablet and mobile device use. With extended use of these devices the neck and shoulders slump forward, and the natural curve of the neck (lordosis) becomes compromised. This results in the local ligaments and muscles having to perform harder to maintain this protective curve in the neck. Ultimately the local tissues suffer fatigue failure and other muscles must assist. These other muscles are not designed to perform these tasks and they too fail. Inflammation is created and pain results. It is best to treat and maintain these conditions early in order to prevent ongoing problems.
At Your Osteopath we treat these conditions with manual therapy and specific exercises directed at initially reducing discomfort and improving range of motion of the neck. Later treatment is directed towards encouraging self-management by applying the correct exercises long term in order to prevent recurrence.
